Respecting the rural character of the village has always been a priority for the Estate.

This long-term stewardship is also reflected in the following designations:

The village is situated within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), where the primary objective is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape. This designation covers some 74% of West Berkshire District.

The majority of Englefield village, along with the House and part of its gardens, is designated as a Conservation Area - an area considered worthy of preservation or enhancement because of its special architectural or historic interest. Within this there are a number of buildings individually listed, as shown on this map, along with the Boundary Stone at SU 6318 7240 (A340) (Grade II) and the Boiler House, Chimney, Sawmill and Joiner’s Shop in the Estate Yard (Grade II).
